Sketchbook
All good design practice begins with sketches of initial thoughts and ideas, leading towards iterative refinement. These are some of my visualization sketches, which help me to understand and work out problems in information visualization design.
I conduct some of my Information Visualization research by writing demo applications using Processing. You can see some of this work by selecting the samples below. Your browser must have the Java Runtime Engine to view these files.
Some applications might take a few moments to load. All are prototypes in various stages of duress/functionality.
I also produce many visualisations (both data-based and abstract) that are not interactive, or which could be considered merely artwork. For these, I’ve used several different software environments, including Processing, Context Free, OpenFrameworks, and others. (Click to enlarge.) These are typically large images (up to 100 megapixels) which I output to archival paper, using the archival giclée process.
Of course, screens never do justice to large digital prints (up to A0 size), but you can get an idea of the level of detail in these images with this example from the image above:
